Understanding and Overcoming Dental Anxiety

Posted on 2/20/2023 by Dr. Boustany
Understanding and Overcoming Dental AnxietyVisits to the dentist make a lot of people nervous. Millions of people feel like a visit to the dentist, despite the various benefits, could be a painful, unpleasant experience. Preventive dental care is one of the most effective forms of care when it comes to maintaining your overall dental health. Regular visits to the dentist help you avoid periodontal disease, tooth decay, teeth loss, and expensive dental procedures. You might also risk developing complex and serious conditions like oral cancer, sleep apnea, or Bruxism. To understand and overcome dental anxiety, it is important to look into some of the reasons why people fear dentist visits.

Fear of Pain

One of the major reasons most people end up fearing dental visits is the fear of pain. While this used to be a legitimate fear, things have changed significantly. Today, most dental processes are painless. Horror stories from people who had unpleasant experiences when they were younger should not prevent you from visiting the dentist. The dentist will make sure they numb the area with local anesthesia or involve sedation if necessary.

Embarrassment

Patients with decayed or badly damaged teeth might end up feeling embarrassed about the state of their oral hygiene. It is normal to feel self-conscious about some dental issues. However, the dentist will likely have seen many such issues before and will be focused only on helping you. The state of your teeth will not be a shock to the dentist, and you have very little to be worried about.

Anesthesia

Every once in a while, people will find funny videos online of people who experience the effects of anesthesia after their dental procedures. It is likely that you will experience numbness, dizziness, and in some cases nausea after the procedure. However, these effects will likely dissipate in a few hours.
