Is the Root Scaling and Planing Procedure Painful?

Posted on 3/30/2020 by Dr. Boustany
Is the Root Scaling and Planing Procedure Painful?Root scaling and planning is a deep cleaning process for your teeth. We use this process to remove all the tartar and plaque deposits that are found there or underneath your gum line.

Why Root Scaling and Planing are Necessary

The food you eat and the beverages you drink each day combine to create dental plaque. This just normally accumulates on your teeth. Fortunately, if you spend two minutes twice a day maintaining good oral hygiene you can remove a lot of this plaque.

However, if you don't do this or you don't do it well, the plaque will harden into tartar. Once this happens, you may develop a variety of dental health issues such as gum disease and tooth decay. This is when the root scaling and planning process become necessary. Simply put, this is a comprehensive cleaning of your teeth and the root surface that lies directly under its gum line.

What You'll Feel After Root Scaling and Planing

Following this procedure, there are some symptoms you'll experience. By anticipating them beforehand, you'll be better prepared to take care of them when they do happen.

Your teeth will likely be sensitive to food, and you'll experience some minor discomfort after the procedure. This may be especially acute for the first two or three days and may last up to a few weeks.
Your gums will slightly bleed when you brush your teeth after the procedure. This bleeding will decrease to the point it'll cease three days after the procedure.

As far as pain following this procedure, you will experience some discomfort after the procedure. However, you should know that we'll administer a local anesthetic before performing this procedure.
Now that you know what to expect with the root planning and scaling process, if we've recommended that you have it, hopefully you'll feel more comfortable calling and scheduling it soon.
