What is Denture Relining?

Posted on 7/23/2020 by Dr. Boustany
What is Denture Relining? If you have missing or damaged teeth, you won't be able to talk, eat or even smile properly. This is where the importance of wearing dentures comes into play. Dentures are removable prosthetics designed for missing, damaged or extracted teeth. They prevent further changes to the oral cavity, thus ensuring that you are able to talk and eat properly.

However, these removable dental appliances are bound to lose their fit over time, and they might require relining to prevent irritation, tissue overgrowth, and fungal infections. Denture relining, therefore, is a dental procedure that entails adding soft or hardliner materials to the inner layer where the denture rests against the gums.

Difference Between Soft Reline and Hard Reline

Soft reline entails the use of tender materials such as a liquid polymer, to add more depth and soften your dentures. This is ideal for denture wearers who are experiencing rapid bone resorption. Moreover, the procedure is fast, and the resulting product is more comfortable.

On the other hand, hard reline involves the use of tough materials to reshape or repair damaged dentures. The procedure typically lasts for years, without requiring further relining. However, the treatment is quite hectic, as it might require the dentures to be tested and relined in a laboratory.

Is Denture Relining Safe?

Denture relining is 100 percent safe. The essence of this procedure is to repair and modify your dentures to ensure they are well fit.

So, What Should I Do Next?

You should have your dentures checked at least once every year to ensure they fit securely and remain as comfortable as ever. To learn more about denture reclining, make a point of visiting our dental offices. Our team will be glad to help in case you need any assistance with your dentures. We can examine your current dentures and let you know how we can help them fit better.
