What Are Receding Gums and Are They Painful? If you notice recession at the gum line, you often discover it does not happen overnight. The following information details how gums recede and what to do about it.

Defining Gum Recession

When the margin of the gingival tissue next to the teeth wears away or pulls back and exposes a tooth's root, recession is the reason. Therefore, when the gums recede, gaps develop between the gum and teeth, which allows disease-causing bacteria to accumulate. When the condition is not treated, the bone and surrounding tissue become damaged. The condition, which is widespread, happens slowly. Recession does not always hurt unless the roots become exposed, which leads to additional sensitivity.

Symptoms of Gum Recession

Sometimes receded gums reveal themselves in long teeth. If you have ever heard of the phrase, “long in the tooth,” it refers to gum recession. When gums recede, due to gum disease, the teeth may appear longer than normal. In some instances, the roots of the teeth become exposed. This is when gum recession can hurt, and, in fact, cause a high level of discomfort. The bacteria and periodontal disease below the gums and surrounding the teeth can also lead to loosened teeth. As the recession worsens, the gum pockets also become deeper, as the gum pulls away from the tooth.

How to Treat Gum Recession

By visiting us for help in combating recession, you can restore the health of your gums and teeth, provided you follow a regular program of dental hygiene at home. Always brush at least twice a day and floss at least once daily. Flossing is important, as it removes the plaque and food between the teeth that brushing misses. We can assist you in improving any problems with recession by performing gum recession surgery or by scheduling a gum graft. One innovative procedure, known as pinhole gum surgery, allows the manipulation of gingival tissue over exposed roots caused by recession. A deep cleaning may be performed initially to get rid of bacteria.

If you have a concern about recession, we can provide a solution. Why not call us today to find out more about gum recession procedures and to arrange a consultation?
