4 Indicators of Gum Disease

4 Indicators of Gum DiseaseEven though your teeth may look good and your smile healthy, but there's always a chance of something unhealthy going on behind. Periodontal disease can be damaging your mouth tissues and bone, causing tooth loss. Caused mainly by development of plaque due to poor oral hygiene, periodontal disease can aggressively spread deep into your gum tissues.

If you pay close enough attention to your gums, you may be able to pick up signs of the disease. While the indicators are difficult to see at the beginning stage, they eventually become more frequent and evident.

Here are a few signs of periodontal disease that you should look out for.

Bleeding

Unless you brush your teeth too hard, healthy gums aren't supposed to normally bleed. If you experience bleeding gums, ranging from light to moderate pressure, it's an indicator that your gum tissues are inflamed and weakened.

Inflammation and Redness

If you notice redness or swelling in your gums, it means that they are inflamed. It's important to know that inflammation is a natural response of your body to fight off any infection. However, when the inflammation gets chronic, it can end up damaging the tissue it is trying to protect.

Abscess

There are certain areas in the gums when an infection can become isolated. These areas typically experience more swelling than surrounding gum tissues. Moreover, they often fill up with pus, which can be extremely painful and sensitive to the touch. Such sore spots remain like this for a few days and must be examined.

Loose or Moving Teeth

If your teeth appear to have shifted or have become loose, this is an indicator of an advanced stage of gum disease. When the gum and bones tissue weakens, it isn't able to hold teeth in place, causing them to lose their attachment.

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should visit a periodontist as soon as possible for a complete evaluation before things get any worse. The sooner your gum diseases is diagnosed, the sooner you will receive treatment, saving any permanent harm to your teeth and gums.
