When Do You Need Root Canal Treatment

When Do You Need Root Canal TreatmentMost people tend to ignore pain or discomfort in their teeth when they chew or eat. In extraordinary cases, one of the most common solutions most people go for is tooth extraction. However, you must not always go to extremes to deal with such pain. If you are suffering from cavities, then the best possible solution should be a root canal. Root canals involve the removal of the infected pulp in the tooth. The tooth is then cleaned and the inner part of the tooth is shaped and sealed. Eventually, a crown is then placed onto the tooth to provide additional protection and restore its function.

The Need for a Root Canal

Root canals are an important solution for individuals suffering from advanced levels of tooth decay. it is necessary when the pulp is inflamed or infected. While tooth decay is one of the most common sources of such infection, it can also result from cracking or chipping of the tooth, especially when it is so serious that it exposes the inner layers of the tooth.

One can also develop such infections or need a root canal when there are repeated dental procedures done on a tooth. It is important to note, though, that the decision to have a root canal should be made as early as possible. If left unattended, the kinds of pulp inflammations or infections that can be remedied by root canals easily develop into painful abscesses that will then necessitate a complete tooth removal anyway.

Even though root canals are particularly effective, not all problems with the tooth can be treated with a root canal. For instance, if the tooth does not have proper bone support, the root canal treatment might not be suitable. If your tooth issues cannot be resolved by a root canal treatment, then the periodontist will recommend a different course of treatment.
