Dental Implant Procedures Charleston, WV
In the United States, millions of individuals face tooth loss, impacting both oral health and confidence. Dental implants offer a comfortable, durable, and natural-looking solution. At Revive Dental and Implant Center, our experts can guide you through the process of receiving dental implants. There are several different types of dental implants available, all which act as the missing tooth root.
Dental implants can be used as the structure for individual crowns as well as bridges and full sets of dentures. These can support either fixed or removable pieces depending on what the patient would prefer. Revive Dental and Implant Center works with each individual patient to determine which type of implant is best for their situation.
Endosteal and Subperiosteal Implants
These are the two different styles of dental implants that you can get. Endosteal implants are a better option because they are more effective than subperiosteal implants. Endosteal implants enter the jawbone whereas subperiosteal implants do not. Instead, these sit over the jawbone inside of the gum tissue. These are used when you have insufficient bone height for supporting endosteal implants.
Dental Implant Methods
Beyond endosteal versus subperiosteal implants, there are also different varieties of dental implants available. These include immediate load dental implants (also called same day implants), All-on-4, single tooth implants, multiple tooth implants, two-stage dental implants, single-stage dental implants, and mini-implants.
Immediate load dental implants allow you to have temporary teeth placed during the healing process. Once you have healed, we can place the permanent teeth. All-on-4 implants support a full set of false teeth on four individual dental implants. Single tooth implants and multiple tooth implants are for people missing one or a few, but not all, of their natural teeth. Single tooth implants fill in small gaps while multiple tooth implants fill in larger gaps. Two-stage dental implants are the most common method. Implantation and abutment attachment happens in two different surgeries. Single-stage implants leave the healing cap visible so that the temporary restoration can be placed without having to reopen the incision. Mini implants are less invasive, and they are used to stabilize lower dentures.
Jawbone Preparation
For some patients, bone grafting may be necessary to prepare their jaw for the implant surgery. This helps to both strengthen the already existing jawbone and to increase the amount of bone tissue available to support the implant. We can use human, animal, and even synthetic bone tissue depending on your preferences and medical needs. The time between grafting and your jaw being ready for implantation can be a few months.
Implantation and Restoration Placement
When your jaw is fully ready for surgery, we will begin the procedure. You will receive anesthesia for this so that you are comfortable throughout implantation surgery. First, our dentist will drill into the gum and bone tissue to make a hole for the implant. They will then place the implant post as well as a temporary restoration to preserve the gap while you wait for osseointegration to occur. This is when the implant fuses with natural tissues to create a steady base.
After you heal from implant surgery, which may be up to six months later, we can schedule permanent restoration placement. Our dentist will begin by removing the temporary restoration we previously placed. After this, the permanent crown, bridge, or denture can be attached to the dental implant. To do this, we will use a dental cement that we can harden with a special light.
