What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants have been used for over 40 years as a restoration option for missing teeth. It is considered to be the most natural way to replace missing teeth. Most implants are made of titanium and are specifically designed to provide stability and support to the root structure of your missing tooth. They are, to date, the longest-lasting solution available.
Will It Hurt Much?
Patients generally say that they experience almost little to no discomfort associated with the dental implant placement procedure. There is also very little if any swelling. There is general anesthesia that is available upon request for those patients who would rather not be awake during the implant procedure.
How Long Will It Take?
Generally speaking, the implants can be placed in the mouth and a temporary tooth can be inserted at the same time. In certain cases, the implants are placed and must heal for several months before the final tooth can be placed. The general time frame is approximately 3 months for a lower jaw implant and 6 months for an upper jaw implant to integrate fully with the jawbone. However, it is important to note that everyone does heal differently, and it could be longer for some and less for others. Your care and progress will be monitored carefully. Your health and progress are our primary concerns.
Will I Have to Be Without My Teeth?
You will not be without replacement teeth at all. Should the temporary crowns not be placed at once than a temporary prosthesis will be made for you. If you were already missing teeth, you most likely can continue to use your removable prosthesis with certain minor adjustments for comfort during the healing period.
Will I Have to Continue to See The Dentist After I Have Implants Placed?
Yes, it is vital that you maintain your daily oral healthcare routine of brushing and flossing and rinsing just as you do for your natural teeth. You should also keep your dental appointments every 6 months.
How Long Will Implants Last?
With proper daily cleaning, avoiding smoking, and reducing your intake of or rinsing, after drinking staining beverages like coffee and tea, it is possible for your implants to last a lifetime.
Am I Too Old for Implants?
The simple answer to that is no. You are never too old to receive dental implants. There are patients over 90 years of age who have received dental implants. They enjoy all the benefits that you will too; easier chewing, easier speaking and just a better overall quality of life!
How Much Will I Be Able To Eat?
Most patients seem to have actual improvements in their ability to chew and are most of the time able to now eat many things that they had given up on ever being able to eat again before having the implant surgery.
What Happens if I Wait?
In regard to implant surgery, you want to have the surgery before you suffer from bone loss. If that happens, it almost always guarantees an expensive treatment in the future. You may need bone grafts to build up the strength of your jawbone so that it can support the implant.
How Much Do They Cost?
Dental implant costs will vary depending on the number of implants you need, the actual condition of your teeth and jawbone, as well as the material you choose for the replacement teeth.
