Dental Veneers FAQ Charleston, WV
We here at Revive Dental and Implant Center get a lot of questions about veneers so we thought we would discuss a few of the more frequently asked questions with you here.
What are Veneers?
Dental veneers are actually extremely thin but very durable shells that are made from porcelain or a composite resin. The material used is manufactured to match the color you choose, which generally matches your teeth. That material is then adhered to the tooth to improve the look of your real tooth.
What Kinds of Veneers Are There?
The most common of veneer materials are, of course, porcelain and then composite. The composite veneers are actually shaped and bonded to the tooth and are made of resin. The veneers that are made of porcelain are more stain-resistant compared to other materials and they are usually made in a lab.
Bonding or Porcelain?
How do I know which to choose? This is a question that one of our office professionals can answer for you. Generally speaking, the veneer you choose is related to which tooth is being covered and the reason you need the veneer. Our dental professionals will help you determine which type of veneer is best for your situation.
Why Would I Need Dental Veneers?
Some patients choose veneers simply to fix discoloration and stains. Others choose this option to fill gaps or to fix chipped, misaligned, or uneven front teeth.
What Are The Advantages of Dental Veneers?
Veneers can improve the appearance of the teeth, and the gum tissues will most likely respond well to dental veneers. They also are able to keep most of the tooth structure because so very little has to be removed. You also, with veneers, have the choice of custom colors and in most cases, the veneers are fairly stain resistant.
Are There Any Drawbacks to Having Veneers?
The biggest drawback is that once your tooth is prepared, you cannot back out of the process. If you have one that should crack it is very difficult to just repair the veneer. Normally a cracked veneer must be replaced entirely, it cannot be repaired. That is why it’s important to take care of them and to tell us any issues you have.
Patients that grind their teeth on a regular basis should let us know. We can help protect your veneers with a mouthguard. Patients with poor gum health are also not good candidates for veneers. It is important to remember that when you have veneers you must maintain a great oral health routine, try to stay away from staining foods, and beverages, and above all, visit us regularly. The tooth beneath the veneer can be susceptible to decay so it is important to take as good a care as possible of your veneers at all times.
