As you probably know, a denture can drastically improve your quality of life if you are missing all or most of your teeth. While dentures help restore your self-confidence and your ability to chew, speak, and smile, their effectiveness and comfort rely heavily on how well they fit. Changes to the Underlying Bone and Soft Tissues
Unlike other tooth replacement options, such as traditional bridges and dental implants, dentures rest on the gum tissues for support. Most dentures consist of prosthetic teeth set in a pink, acrylic base that fits around the gums and alveolar ridge (the bone that supports your teeth). Over time, these tissues may shrink or change shape, which typically affects the fit of your appliance.
The relationship between your teeth and jawbone is symbiotic. Your jawbone supports the teeth, while your teeth provide the physical stimulation that keeps the bone healthy and strong. When you lose your teeth, you lose this stimulation. Eventually, the bone will begin to deteriorate or atrophy, even with a denture.
Your gums may also undergo changes that cause an improper fit. For instance, these soft tissues tend to shrink during the healing period following a tooth extraction, a common preliminary procedure before we place a denture. Other issues like gum disease or trauma may also contribute to an ill-fitted denture.
When Is It Time for A Reline?
Whether you wear dentures or dental implants, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends schedule a routine checkup twice a year, about every six months. During your routine checkup, Dr. Chad Boustany will check the fit of you denture and determine if a reline is necessary. Your checkup is an excellent opportunity to voice any questions or concerns, especially if your denture is uncomfortable.
Without a reline, you may experience a number of issues associated with ill-fitting dentures. The most common indicators that a reline is necessary include: red or irritated gum tissue, scar tissue overgrowth, fungal infections, and even ulcers, lesions, or abscesses. Many of these problems can cause significant pain, resulting in a denture that is difficult to use.
As with any restoration, dentures also wear out over time with daily use. Both the prosthetic teeth and acrylic base are subject to damage or wear-and-tear. To avoid the need for more frequent relines, be sure to implement the proper care and cleaning techniques.
How Do We Reline Your Dentures?
There are two types of relines: soft relines and hard relines. A soft reline is often the preferred choice among denture users, because it is generally a more comfortable experience than the latter option. During your soft reline, we layer in a liquid polymer to the bottom of the base, which adds depth and cushions your gums. The procedure is relatively quick, simple, comfortable, and cost-effective.
A hard reline follows the same basic concept but involves a firmer material, much like the actually base of the denture itself. This method is typically considered a more permanent and effective solution over soft relines. The result is a denture that does not need to be relined or replaced for several years!
