Dentures Vs. Dental Implants
Charleston, West Virginia

Mature woman smiling on a couch at Revive Dental and Implant Center in Charleston, WVIf you are currently missing one or more teeth, you may be wondering what to do next. For years, removable dentures were the only option for people with missing teeth. These days, there is a wide variety of replacement options that are stronger and more esthetically-pleasing than ever before.

At Revive Dental and Implant Center, we firmly believe that dental implants are the ideal solution. Even if you currently wear dentures, dental implants can change your life!

What Are Dentures?

A denture is a removable appliance that consists of prosthetic teeth set in a flesh-colored acrylic base. A partial denture is used to replace one or more adjacent teeth, while a complete denture is used to replace an entire row in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. Unlike complete dentures, partials usually secure to the surrounding teeth using metal claps.

Because they are removable, complete dentures rest on the gum tissue for support. This can cause a number of issues, such as discomfort, sore spots, embarrassing slips, and problems chewing or speaking. The same is true for partial dentures, with the added issue of visible metal clasps that some people find cosmetically unappealing. Dentures are still a cheap and effective tooth replacement option used by many people.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that acts as a root element of a prosthetic tooth. During a minor surgery, Dr. Chad Boustany places the implant underneath the gums and into the jawbone. Over time, the screw fuses to the bone through a process known as osseointegration.

Once the osseointegration is complete, we attach an abutment, or support structure, to the top of the implant. The abutment helps securely link the underlying screw to your visible restoration, whether it be a single dental crown, fixed bridge, or full-arch appliance (including dentures). These restorations are usually made from porcelain or zirconia, both of which are extremely durable and aesthetically-pleasing!

Why Choose Implants Over Dentures?

The process of osseointegration is responsible for the many benefits of implant treatment. Because dental implants become a part of your biology, your new restoration will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. Dentures, on the other hand, will not. Visit our Denture FAQ to learn more about dentures.

The benefits of choosing implants over dentures include the:

•  Superior Cosmetics: Porcelain and zirconia restorations are virtually-indistinguishable from natural teeth.
•  Superior Comfort: Implants do not irritate the gum tissue. Because they are supported by the underlying bone, you can eat, speak, and smile with confidence and comfort.

•  Superior Convenience: Unlike removable dentures, implants do not require any special care. You can simply brush and floss your restoration as you would your natural teeth.

•  Superior Durability and Longevity: Conventional dentures typically need to be replaced every seven years. They require repairs and relines even more frequently. Dental implants can last for several decades with the proper care and maintenance. In some cases, they can even last a lifetime!

•  Superior Self-Esteem: Because dentures are removable, embarrass slips can occur while chewing or speaking. Implants are much more secure, giving you confidence in your new beautiful smile!

•  Superior Long-Term Oral Health: Dentures need to be repaired, relined, or replaced due to changes in your gums and underlying bone. Implants are the only replacement option that stimulates the jawbone, preventing the deterioration and atrophy traditionally associated with tooth loss.

For those who love their dentures but need extra support holding them down, We also offer our All-on-4 treatment or implant-supported dentures. Visit our Dentures Vs All-On-4 page to learn more about the benefits of implant-supported dentures.
