What are Partial Dentures?
A partial denture, or partial, is a common traditional treatment replaces several consecutive teeth. It is a removable prosthesis consisting of fake teeth on a rigid acrylic base. The base, which is made to mimic your actual gums, uses the soft tissue for support. A partial denture is almost exactly like a complete denture. The biggest difference between the two, aside from the number of teeth they are meant to replace, is that the partial denture contains metal clasps. These clasps are meant to attach to your healthy teeth for more support.
What Can I Expect with a Partial Denture?
Your partial denture is custom created using impressions that we take during your consultation. It may take a few appointments to ensure an optimal fit. Even after making sure that it fits properly, you might still notice some discomfort for a time after you receive your final partial denture. This is completely normal. The discomfort and awkwardness do go away as you get used to the restoration. However, should you notice significant pain, that the pain doesn’t go away, or that it gets worse, give us a call right away. We will take a look at your denture to see what adjustments might be needed.
What Do I Need to Know About Denture Care?
Just like your natural teeth, your partial denture requires regular daily care. The care you give your partial denture, however, is different than how you care for your real teeth. First, the denture needs to be taken out of your mouth. While you need to brush it, do not use toothpaste. Toothpaste can cause scratches that provide ideal hiding places for bacteria.
After brushing your partial denture, it should be left out of your mouth while you sleep. This gives your gums a chance to rest. The pressure from the denture can be too much for the tissue, so the rest at night allows the tissue to breathe and heal. Store your denture in a glass of water to prevent warping. If you have small children or pets in your home, make sure that you store your partial denture where it cannot be accessed.
Do I Have Other Options?
While a removable partial denture might be a common option, it is not the only one. If you are only missing a small number of teeth, a bridge may be used. Depending upon the condition of your jawbone, as well as a review of your medical history and lifestyle, you might even be a candidate for a partial fixed bridge using dental implants.
